This visa route enables international employees to gain experience in a UK-based role that is aligned with a long-term career path within their employer’s global operations. It is commonly used by multinational firms with formal graduate development schemes designed to prepare future managers and technical specialists.
To qualify, applicants must be employed by an overseas entity with a direct corporate link to the UK sponsor, such as shared ownership or organisational control. The UK-based role must form part of an established graduate training scheme aimed at developing the individual for a future managerial or technical position.

Overseas Employment Requirement
You must currently be employed by a company located outside the UK that has a direct ownership or control link with the UK sponsor. You must also have worked continuously for that overseas business for a minimum of 3 months before submitting your application.
Sponsorship by a Licensed UK Business
Your UK-based employer must hold a valid sponsor licence under the GMB – Graduate Trainee route. They are responsible for assigning you a CoS, which confirms the job details, your start date, and that all conditions under UK immigration rules are met. The CoS must be issued within three months prior to your application date.
Appropriate Occupation and Salary Level
Your UK role must be on the list of eligible occupations for the graduate trainee route, typically at graduate level or above. The position should align with the specialist or managerial focus of your training programme and demonstrate clear progression from your current role.
The current salary requirement is £27,300 per annum or the applicable going rate for your job role, whichever is higher. Your UK sponsor must guarantee this salary level throughout your placement.
Financial Maintenance Requirement
You’ll need to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your living expenses while staying in the UK, unless your sponsor has agreed to provide financial support. This means you must have held a minimum of £1,270 in your bank account for 28 continuous days before submitting your visa application.

Which Employers Can Sponsor the Graduate Trainee Visa
In order to sponsor a graduate trainee, a UK-based employer must hold an active sponsor licence under the GMB – Graduate Trainee route. The UK company must be connected to the overseas entity through common ownership or control and operate within a legitimate corporate structure.
The employer must assign a CoS confirming the role, salary, job code, and training structure. The position must satisfy the skill and salary standards specified by UK Visas and Immigration. Application Guide
Application Process for Graduate Trainee Visa UK
To apply for the visa, you must submit an online application from outside the UK. Switching into this route from inside the UK is not permitted.
Once you’ve received your CoS, you must complete the online visa application form using the reference number on your certificate. You will then be required to provide your biometric information by attending an appointment at a visa application centre located in your country of residence.
Supporting documentation must be submitted as part of your application. This typically includes your passport, evidence of your three months of overseas employment, details of your structured graduate training program, proof of funds (if applicable), and tuberculosis test results if you’re from a listed country.
Payslips, bank statements, and certified translations may also be required, based on your personal circumstances.
Once your application is submitted and all required evidence has been received, UK Visas and Immigration will usually make a decision within 3 weeks. Some visa application centres offer priority services for an extra fee, which can speed up the decision-making process.

The visa allows you to remain in the UK for up to 12 months, or for the time stated on your CoS plus 14 days, whichever is shorter. The duration of stay is directly linked to your structured graduate training programme and the dates provided by your UK sponsor.
You cannot extend your stay beyond the 12-month limit. This visa route is intended for short-term assignments that form part of a formal graduate training programme.
If you plan to remain in the UK after your visa ends, you’ll need to apply for a different visa category, such as the Skilled Worker visa, if you meet the relevant requirements.
Alternatively, if your employer offers a new eligible graduate placement, you may apply for another Graduate Trainee visa from outside the UK, provided you continue to meet all necessary criteria.
Visa Cost
How Much Does the Visa Cost?
As of 2025, the application fee for the UK Graduate Trainee Visa is £319. In addition to the visa application fee, you must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which is currently £1,035 per year.
You should also account for additional costs, such as fees for biometric appointments, document translation, or priority processing if you choose a faster service.
Permitted Activities
Permitted Activities in the Graduate Trainee Route
With a Graduate Trainee Visa, you are allowed to:
- Carry out your role in the UK as outlined in your Certificate of Sponsorship, provided it forms part of your employer’s structured graduate training programme
- Take part in a course of study, as long as it does not impact your main sponsored job
- Have your spouse, partner, or children join you in the UK if they satisfy the immigration requirements for dependants
- Leave and re-enter the UK without constraint during the time your visa is valid
- Carry out voluntary work, as long as it is:
- Unpaid, and
- With a registered charity, voluntary organisation, associated fundraising body, or statutory body (such as Historic England)
What You Cannot Do
You are not permitted to do the following while holding a Graduate Trainee Visa:
Apply to settle permanently in the UK
Apply for public funds or benefits, including the State Pension
Change jobs or take up employment in a distinct role or with another employer
Work a second job, whether paid or unpaid
