The International Sportsperson Visa is designed for world-class athletes and coaches who aim to significantly contribute to their sport at the highest level in the UK. It replaces the previous Tier 2 Sportsperson and Tier 5 Creative and Sporting visas.

To be eligible, individuals need to be recognised as either elite sportspersons or qualified coaches with the potential to enhance their sport within the UK significantly. The visa is initially issued for up to three years and may be expanded. After five years, holders can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).

Visa holders can live and work for their sponsor, take up a second job if qualified, engage in sports broadcasting, pursue studies, and travel without restrictions. Dependants, such as partners and children, can also join the visa holder in the UK, making it a comprehensive solution for international sportspeople and their families.

UK International Sportsperson Visa Requirements

Basic Requirements

The applicant must be 16 or over and have a job offer from an approved sponsor. This sponsor must hold a valid International Sportsperson sponsor licence and provide a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) for the role the applicant wishes to take in the UK. Applicants from certain countries need to submit a valid TB test result. 

Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) Requirement

Applicants must possess a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) provided by a UK-based sports organisation, club, event coordinator, or any other entity involved in sports. The issuing body must be authorised by the Home Office to grant CoS for the International Sportsperson category.

The CoS will detail the job and salary offered, confirm that the applicant is qualified for the role, and state that the relevant UK Sports Governing Body has endorsed the applicant. As stated on the CoS, the visa application must be made within three months before the start date of the job.

Endorsement Requirement by Sports Governing Body

A critical component of the application is obtaining approval from an appropriate UK Sports Governing Body. This endorsement confirms that the applicant is internationally recognised as an elite sportsperson or a qualified coach.

The endorsement letter contains a unique number that identifies it, starting with the abbreviation of the governing body (for example, “FA” for The Football Association in football).

Financial Requirement

Applicants must show they have sufficient funds to sustain themselves in the UK. This means they need to have a minimum of £1,270 in their bank account for at least 28 days before the application.

This financial requirement can be exempted if the applicant has already been in the UK on a valid visa for at least 12 months or if the UK sponsor commits to supporting the applicant financially for the first month, as verified on the Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).

English Language Requirement

If applying for a visa for a period exceeding 12 months, applicants must meet the English language requirement. This can be satisfied by passing an authorised English language test at CEFR level A1 in speaking and listening or by having an academic degree conducted in English that is recognised by Ecctis as comparable to a PhD, master’s, or bachelor’s degree in the UK. 

Nationals from majority English-speaking countries automatically meet this requirement.

  • Identity and Nationality Proof: You must have a valid passport or another document proving your identity and nationality. Ensure your passport has at least one blank page for your visa.
  • Travel History:  Provide any expired passports or travel documents to demonstrate your travel history for the last five years.
  • Endorsement Letter: A letter of endorsement from your sport’s governing body confirming that you are an internationally recognised elite sportsperson or qualified coach.
  • Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS): You need to submit the reference number of your Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS). Your employer, who must be a licensed sponsor in the UK, will supply you with this number.
  • Proof of English Knowledge: Proof of English language capability, usually a language test result or degree credentials taught in English. 
  • Financial Evidence: You must demonstrate that you can economically sustain yourself in the UK. This usually involves providing bank statements showing you have the specific amount available. 
  • Tuberculosis Test Results: If applicable to your country, you will need to include this test result.
